History
Corso Italia is a Toronto neighbourhood situated on St. Clair Avenue West, between Westmount Avenue and Lansdowne Avenue. The community is considered Toronto's second Italian neighbourhood after Little Italy on College Street, although Corso Italia has a larger Italian population. There is also a considerable Latin American and Portuguese community in the area.
The community is the eastern half of what was previously known as Earlscourt. This community was originally settled by British immigrants in 1906, and was annexed by the City of Toronto in 1910. During the late 1950s a large wave of Italian immigrants, in addition to Italians from College Street, moved to Earlscourt and the surrounding area. Corso Italia hosts several annual festivals, including the Corso Italia Toronto Fiesta in July.
Homes
Earlscourt's solid brick homes were built mostly between 1910 and 1950. There is a good mix of detached and semi-detached houses, as well as bungalows.
Most of the houses contain a cold cellar. Instead of backyard with a lawn, these areas are usually reserved for fruit and vegetable gardens.
Shopping
In this neighbourhood there are numerous cafés, bakeries, ice cream shops, shoe stores, restaurants, clothing shops, and food markets, many with products imported from Europe.
